How hard are Banners to find?

Bannerstones? I have found a couple broken ones as have most buddies that I walk with. Complete ones are definitely rare. To go even further some types are much more rare than others. JMO. Maybe some others will weigh in.

We found 2 this fall, both broken. If you look they are posted down on the list. They came from a site that was heavily inhabited and were found down about two and half feet and couple of feet apart. Other than that I have found none. Unless you count a birdstone that I found about a quarter mile away.

I'm still waiting to find my first whole one. I've found 4 fragments of bannerstones and the eye of a popeyed birdstone...I'm getting closer at least. They're rare to find in good condition. Most of the bannerstones in circulation are fakes.

Every time I see that north you have I stop to look. Could you repost it with some larger PHOTOS, please and thank you. Mr. Thirty7

No problem Buckhunter, I'll repost some larger pictures of that blade in my " Blades, Preforms, and Knives " thread.

There seems to be a concentration of them in Ohio and Indiana, they are certainly found over a much wider area but not as commonly.

When I lived in Northern Indiana I found one decent one (a tube), a couple of dinged up ones, and lots of pieces, parts, preforms and wings in about 20 years of hunting. That was probably par for most hunters there. When I moved to Kentucky, the number of people that had found even a piece of one dropped significantly (although many fine banners have been found there.)

hello there,
its been a good couple of years for me here in tenn.hadnt seen hide nor hare of one. jamey

They are very rare in my area. I have been hunting for 45 years and only have a couple of pieces. My brother and a buddy of mine both have broken Geniculates that were found in the same general area. I believe the same Friend found a Winged Banner back in the 80's but sold it later on. I don't personally know of any others being found here.

Kinda what I thought I might hear. My mentor buddy who has been at this for years showed me a beautiful winged banner he found. He used to digs for Indiana State, so I don't know if it was a surface find or not. He keeps telling me to keep an eye open for slate pieces.

Then I guess I have been fortunate. I have found one complete flawless whale tail banner, a fluted slate shield banner, that had pole damage but was still almost all there and I found about 8 rows away a flawless whale tail banner that was almost fully complete. This piece had the perfect blades and was as nice as my first one. I sold the first two and the last one was stolen from me. I still wish i had them. The first whale tail came out of the side of a mountain Tee-off point I was raking out and setting up. It was only the second Indian artifact I had found in my life. Basically it really got me hunting for them.
