how far down do coins sink?

ive heard coins on the beach esspecially the wet areas they can go quite deep,, but as for a set depth each year i really not sure there,, i know they can get turfed around in and out of depths,, because of the currents and the continuous movement of sand,, so really i would say "no" because it constantley changeing all the time, hope iam right here,, HH Paul,.

maybe do an experiment? how much it sinks in one day/week/month/year then do the math? maybe its online somewhere...it must differ from soil condition to soil condition.

From everything I have read & from what experience I have had on the beach, the coins all tend to settle to the hard strata beneath the sand. If you are hunting the dry sand above the high tide line, you will probably tend to find fresher losses, jewlery, modern change, etc. The older things are usually found at low tide, trapped on the gravel or rocky shelf area or water break line, or in tide pools, espically in rocky shore line areas. There are a lot of surf & sand hunters on this forum who know all about it. I have little real experience as a beach hunter. I make it to the ocean two or three times a year & usually hit the beach at least once each visit. You might post your question again under beach finds & I am sure you will get a ton of better information.

Cant see as where there would be any set rule.An item on the beach becomes "buried " by the effects of wind , surf and tide.Every beach is different in these aspects.A beach can sit fairly dormant for awhile and build enormous amounts of sediment over items. Throw in one or two good storms and a couple hundred years of sand can be removed.I believe that most beaches have a cycle. What mother nature gives she eventually takes back.Although thats not a set rule either, most beaches do go through periods of building and eroding and the heavy items buried there (coins and treasure)pretty much stay where they are at.???
