Just asking....what if.

What if your detecting In a known disaster area where things got lost and carried away by natural forces a long time ago and you stumbled across...say...the corner of a very rusty, box shaped object sticking up from the middle of a stream in a park, along a highway where you can bee seen by anyone driving by?

And just suppose you suspect that the object might be something like...Oh say... a safe that could possibly weigh a hundred pounds or two. And maybe you even suspect that the object may contain some unspecified valuables but let your imagination think maybe from a jewelry store or some other money making business.

Now the laws of the stream possibly prohibit anyone from disturbing it because it's an approved fish commission body of water and you might need some rather industrious efforts to extract it. And the park is governed by the state so just possibly the archaeological resources act may apply because it's much older than 50 years...possibly.
The highway is the only road around...not traveled heavily because it's deep in the mountains...but enough that passer-byers might take a second or third look at what the heck someone is doing and the locals might take offense. And not to mention, the only place to park is along that highway so it's like putting out a roadsign that someones around.

Sounds like quite the quandary. What or how do you do anything? Just asking.

I have a feeling I know the area you are talking about as well as the "disaster". Knowing what I know about that story, i'd be finding one way or another to get that box out! If it contains what we think, it will be more than enough to pay the fines.....as long as you get it out and confiscate the materials BEFORE you are arrested ;D
seriously though, you are treading on thin ice with a few of those factors, however I'm one who is always up for a challenge, so if you are anything like me, you'll find a way to get it. Come-a-long attached to a nearby tree.....atv with winch....and do your work at night!
If you want a partner, let me know, i'll bring all the predator hunting accessories and if anyone stops, it will just look like we are hunting coyotes!! It's all about the presentation.

hey djm, you beat me to the punch buddy. also you can place a couple of cane poles up against your car, so what will a
passerby think then? gone fishin, or thinkin' about it.

Come-a-long..hmmm. Nice idea.

Yea...you probably do know where I'm heading. Just put in for a couple vacation days weekend of Apr. 8th-11th. Weekend before trout opens. Figured I'd look like I'm just scouting good fishing holes...lol. Maybe I should pick up my fishing license too...make it look real.
I like the rods against the car idea too...as long as nobody walks off with them while my back is turned. But...week before trout...maybe rethink that. I'd look like a poacher.

Just hoping for a fair week before without a lot of rain. Water a bit on the clear side and a lower flow would be nice.

First I'd make sure it is what I think it is. Then I'd park my "broken down" vehicle nearby and wait for my friend with his towtruck to come "rescue" me. Haul up the item, "miraculously" fix the vehicle, & drive away. Only thing to worry about would be helpful people stopping by to, well, help....

I would enlist the help of djm of PA and one other person. The third person should drop you and djm of PA off at the spot,....and drive the car about a half mile up the road, so as to not attract attention. Maybe also do this very early in the morning, or even at dusk,...so that you will be hard to be seen. If this is in water, you better wear a wetsuit of some sort. Get next to the item and ascertain what it is. It is probably,...unfortunately,...a rusted car door.
Be able to summon the third person when you are ready to have him pick you up.

I'm thinking that my trout fishing is done a bit upstream from there in the upper WESTERN part. Not too much action yet! Water flowing pretty fast. Good luck in checking out your find (or your favorite lure that just happened to get snagged)!WINK WINK! P.S. I do most of my yote' hunting at night!WINK WINK! Season is over for my area though.

You could get a garbage bag and always look like you are picking up trash...

Also, you could have a friend pull off the side of the road above, and another below you some distance. They would let you know via cell phone of anyone is approaching so you could 'look normal.' Also, if someone was to stop and check on them first, they could let you know as this would buy you enough time 'look normal.'

Tomorrow's the big day, I'll be rooting for you, Good Luck!! Remember the little people who gave you all the ideas :D

Well here's my two cents, if you can see it from the road there must be a bridge nearby. First go to Home Depot, and rent a gas powered concrete saw and get a couple good metal blades. Then I'd get a come along and pull it under the bridge, and cut the sucker open while a "fisherman" friend kept a look out. That way if it's empty you didn't waste time and effort pulling it all the way out. If it's not, you fill a big hiking pack with the contents and walk out like any other hiker.

Hi Mate

I get a decent lenght of camoflage netting and errect it with bamoo, poles or steaks (keeping it low to the ground) then work to uncover whatever it is ... once you verify what it is, Id rebury it to consider my next move ... Vehicle, afterdark and chains. : ) ... have a good day

why not hire a crane to pull it up. Just say you dropped your safe accidentally while moving. Really, dont make it any more complicated. Does a car along the road draw that much attention? Check it out, if it is a safe, then the come a long might be a good solution, but don't try to fake a fishing trip, you will just draw the game warden, in or out of season.

Could be its an already "emptied" safe. If you can see it from the road, then there is a good chance it was dumped after it was emptied.

Good Luck!

maybe he is taking the "shut your mouth" approach after finding a heck of a cache, couldn't blame him!!! I thought at the very least, however, I'd have gotten a PM from him asking for my address to send me one of the coins for giving the "come-a-long" advice :-\

:D

Pertaining to #14. The person was very kind to send you a coin. Best of luck to all of you.

you mean it WOULD be nice, I haven't heard a thing!!! :dontknow:

Didn't make it up yet. Bad weather, rain and more rain with no end in site from what the weather people say.
For what it's gonna cost me with hotel costs, fuel, meals etc., I want to make sure the water isn't too high to negotiate.
We've had over 7" of rain since March and 4" alone this month so far. A day trip would involve over 8 hrs + of driving round trip.
Driving me nuts wanting to go but gotta let some common sense prevail with resources.

I know fall is out of the question and probably in a few weeks I'll lose my window with the brush and weeds growing. Now I'll have to be extra careful cause the rattlers will all be comming out to sun and warm up. Prime territory there. Was reading a blog where they were finding them up to 52" long last year in June.

Definately need to at least get up there to verify the topography and water conditions for this time of year.
Was up there 2 years ago late summer and the weeds were as high as me. Just getting to the creek was a challenge and I was keenly aware of where I was stepping the whole time. The only thing worse than seeing a rattler is hearing a rattler and not seeing it. Had that happen once up there...not a good feeling.

It must be very upsetting to hear a snake and cannot hear it. Move slowly.

Sounds like too many problems, better give the job to someone that will do it. I remember seeing a vid of a guy detecting in a park, and one of the signals was under some dog poo, so he didnt dig it!! You will never find anything, if you only look for excuses. If its flooded, that is a legitimate excuse, but high weeds and snakes? Get with it man, we are all waiting!
