How do you clean IH

Boil some hydrogen peroxide and drop it in for a few minuets . If it's not clean yet use a tooth pick to get the crusty stuff off and drop it in some more hot hydrogen peroxide. I used this method on all the Indian Head cents I found even the 1877 and they came out nice.

Yep warm peroxide and a peroxide soaked qtip or even an old soft toothbrush for the really tough ones

depending on the condition, after an HP soak, the coin may appear a bit dry.

You might also want to consider a soak in some mineral oil.

Toss in some oxi-clean with the peroxide as well.....usually one soak will do it.

With peroxide I have found you IH's will turn black. Personally I like the green patina, but peroxide does do the job. A few I soaked in peroxide. 017.JPG I want to add, its all depending on the condition of your IH. If you found it in rough condition soaking it in peroxide will not make your coin turn out like the ones I just posted.

Here is one I did with some peroxide that I only warmed a bit then brushed. Kept most of the green patina. I think if you leave them too long they tend to darken more

Same results here Ahab8. ....3 to 5 minutes per soak....

My point was this is what happens when they sit to long in peroxide. You can clearly see the sate of green patina loss. 015.JPG If I remember when I was soking these an emergency happen an by the time I got back all my IH"s turned out like this. Danr'et

Been there and done that myself. Fell asleep with a few in the drink and you're absolutely right about losing that nice patina. Good example

Not sure...I remember something about him banging his head off of a luggage compartment in an airplane when it hit some turbulence, although that could have been unrelated to an OD of some sort.

Edit: According to Wikipedia, yes, it was a cocaine OD. That sort of explains the constant yelling....

And everybody thought he was just hyper. Lol you just never know

Never heard of the oxi clean. How much do you put in ?

I use an old coffee cup...filled it 1/3 peroxide, microwave for a minute then add about half teaspoon of oxi-clean. ..it will bubble over so have it outside or in a utility tub. I had an IH that just would not come clean with multiple peroxide baths....I saw the oxi-clean under the sink and gave it a shot....worked like a charm with no patina loss. I agree with you Helix....I've seen many black coppers posted here from leaving it in too long
