Hello all,
New to the site and just really finding this part of Treasure net.
Couple of questions how do you really choose what your best find is.
Sometimes it is more than just how much is it worth. Some of my better
finds mean more to me because of where I was or who I was hunting with.
Also .. been trying to take some pics, but either camera does not focus well
or the light is not best. Any way here is some of the finds I recovered, most
were found while stationed in Hawaii from 1992 - 1995.
First picture is of what rings I have left. I sold some a while back to buy a motorcycle.
The second picture shows some of the rings I like best. In the center there is
a 1 and 1/3 carat Diamond. To the left of that is 18K rose gold with 5 diamonds.
I have been told each of the 5 are 1/3 carat and high quality, the 5 are very bright.
To the right of the big diamond is a high end Jade ring, I was told by jade dealers in Hawaii
that this ring was made by better jelwers in Hong Kong. It is 18 K ring but jade is set in 24K.
The sides of this ring have seven bands alternating white and yellow gold , jade and bands are
lined with single cut diamonds. To the right of that ring is a nice man's ruby ring. In back you
can see a Star Sapphire ring. To the left of that one is a 18K ring shape like a snake, with small
diamonds for head and eyes, this ring I had tried to dig out of the suft on several different days,
had to get a lucky low tide to recover it .. I think it was near 18 inches deep. The statue of Liberty $5 dollar
gold coin and chain I found just by luck, working the dry sand on Wiakiki beach while looking for
my two daughters after hunting the water for a couple hours. The band under the Jade ring is
pure platinum a nice heavy ring the give you a good feeling when finding it. The Brietling watch
($1250 model) I found hunting at about 2AM in chest deep water, with a two foot hammerhead
shark swimming circles around me.
I guess they all have a story but as a whole this is what makes metal detecting a wonderful hobby for me.

Re: How do you choose

After posting that late last night and reading over what I wrote, I sort of feel
I almost skipped over how happy finding the 1 1/3 carat diamond ring had made me.

Then I started thinking what my collection would be like with out it, would not be the same.
It is really the one ring everyone likes to see when I bring out my finds to show to friends.

And then thinking back to that day I found it, a friend and I got to a small beach south of Honolulu
we were pretty much the first ones there except for the lifeguards that open the gates. We started getting ready to hunt when one of the lifeguards yelled to me " Tom two days ago some lady lost a big diamond ring" and he pointed us to the area she had told him it was. The hunt was on, with both my friend and I with Whites Surfmaster PI machines. As you all know you can not get to close before the machines start talking to each other, so I moved to the left of where I thought it would be and started working a slow grid. It took about two hours of searching, I wish I had started on the right side of where I thought it was. But after two hours of looking I got a good signal in only ankle deep water, looking into that scoop, I got that feeling we all dream of. After years of searching there was the big diamond ring that I always told my wife I was going to find her today. Having already talked to the lifeguard I knew the lady that lost it did not leave any name of number so I put the ring in my pouch and continued searching for more rings. The fun part was my hunting buddy saw that I had left the area the ring was in. He kept bugging me, saying you found it didn't you. I made him wait until we went to lunch to tell I had found it, you should have seen his eyes pop out of his head. You could see he was happy for me that I found it, but sad that he did not. Of course there were days where he would find a ring that I had the same feeling. But it is all good when your finding treasure with good friends.

He is another pic of that ring, I took it this morning in natural light. I may need to try a different camera, I can't get to close and still focus.

Oh and I was asked what detector I use. In the water most times I use my Whites Surfmaster PI. For the dry sand I use a Whites Eagle Spectrum. I also have a Fisher 1280-X and 1235-X.

Re: How do you choose

WOw and Wow Tom,
wonderful collection of Best Finds.
Thanks for sharing these photos with us
as it's an inspiration to see this stuff
knowing what is truely possible out there.
Congrats big time!

I used to have a pile of gold and silver jewelry like that
but sadly, it was stolen three years back,
along with all my silver dollars and halfs.
I did have my 1856 $1 gold coin stashed and still have that at least :)
Now I am building my treasure chest back up again.
I will never catch back up to you but that's ok.

Awesome stuff. Thanks!

Smiles!

Re: How do you choose

Tom,
I've only been detecting for a year and I get put off of it sometimes like this weekend when I hunted a few beaches here in Ireland for about 4 hours and all I have to show for it is about €20 in change, a few English coins and a pre-euro Irish pound coin. I haven't found much jewelry, but I don't setect to find modern coins. Thanks for sharing your finds because it gives me inspriration to keep looking and not to give up. How long did it take you to find all that stuff?

DJ_Quinn

I think I saw some of your posts, and it looks like you do well finding the older coins.
Location is everything, and seems like there would be lots of old places there.

For me I like finding gold at the beaches, so it is best to go to beaches where
a lot of people go. I have friends that do really well at the italian beaches.

Most of the stuff I have found was in hawaii where millions of people go each year.
Here in florida I am learning it is best to go after big events, like 4th of July or
there was a Air Show last month that brought in 100,000 people. There is a big beach
contest going on right now .. and I plan on going down to the beach later this afternoon.

Good luck on your old coin finds .. I hope your next one is gold.
