im burning out trying to find good places to hunt. I dont quite know how to approach people and ask thanks to the morons on spike tv doing it for profit. My area is LITTERED with old houses from the coal mining era. as a matter of fact, my first silver came from my brothers house which was an old house from the 20s. anyhow, id love to hear how some of you have been successful in asking for permission. Should i throw in that my son will be with me? maybe theyd feel bad saying no then lol.

hi cjon455 , i am new to this also , but the advice i have been given is to just be honest and ask , if they hesitate offer to share some of the finds and that you will leave the area as good as you found it . worst they can do is say no . but i am sure there will be more yes then no.
but would love to hear other creative ways to ask how to do it legaly ?

Same here, I'd love to know as well... Not exactly running out of places to hunt but I hate passing on a location because idk who owns it or how to go about asking. I was thinking of making up some VistaPrint business cards with my promise of leaving the area as found or sharing the finds. Thoughts?

if you find a piece of property and do not know the land owners name , you can go to the local courthouse to the deeds office and they can pull up the plat of the property and give you the land owners name and maybe phone number , its all public information.
i have used this to purchase antique log cabins .

ruby gold ring 700.jpgI have a picture of a local house and around the border are items I have found there. I show this to the land owner and they give permission after I agree to split high value items 50/50. The items in the border include a 3 ct ruby & gold ring, a 200 year old ax mounted, some old oil can tags. etc. it works every time and it is an honest presentation. You see, some are worried about you messing up the lawn and others just think, whats in it for oil tags 700-.jpgsteeplechase 700-.jpgax300.jpgme.

I usually just ask. I have asked at deed office for info on who owned a piece of property; then I called the person (I live in tiny town) and asked them if I could hunt their land (didn't find much on first hunt - will be going back). If you get a "no", don't push the matter and find another place to hunt. Yes, I know, sometimes persistence pays off, but most times it just pisses people off.

Good luck and happy hunting.

I see you have an extra detector...offer them to use it along side you....Gotta love them old coalmine row houses!

Well, I go to the door knock, And introduce myself. I explain that I detect for as a Hobby and ask if they have ever had anyone detect there home?
I tell them what I usually find ie; old coins, civil war relic's and such, And make a point to explain that any trash I find i'll haul off, And any high value
finds we'll split, Also if the home has come down their family, then do they know of any jewerly ever being lost? they describe it they can have it. If I find relic's I sometimes make a case up of some finds and give it to the owners, I get told fine have fun alot more than I get told No..........just my way.......HH

I like that, I was thinking of that myself. I might do that approach. What do you say when they voice reservations about digging up their yard? My response would be that I fill in my holes, replace the grass, and after a good rain you wouldn't know I was there.

Well, Number 1 I never ask at a manicured yard, You can just tell that some people care more about their yards than the kids(kidding).
But I tell them how I either cut the plug, or use the slit proceedure, and have sometimes used the probe and screwdriver method......
And I always tell them that I fill all holes and have been known to show them the junk in the back of my truck that I have hauled outta others yards....
Good Luck! .....HH

It may sound oversimplistic but....just ask. If you get a no, ask somewhere else. Look at it this way.... if you only get a yes 10% of the time, that means once for every ten locations. Put another way, that's TEN ok's for every 100 locations. That should keep you busy! TTC

Ive been told NO!..before but I have also been told YES! many times .....& have found a crap ton of goodies from the YES' s

Just go up and ask with your child with you...and I never offer to share what I find...I have spent too much money on my equipment to just give away the goodies...I have been told yes and I have been told no with no one ever asking for anything I find.....just my two cents worth...

thanks guys for all the tips, im sure ill get over the newbie apprehension and just go for it.

I hate to dispute this but in your other post 50/50 doesn't seem correct.
