That ones pretty obvious but I'm not surprised by what people miss any more. I was in an antique mall 2 years ago when I came across a booth with several signs & chalkboards stating in huge letters "I Buy Silver". I was almost past the booth when I noticed a silver bowl marked as plate on a table in the front. It looked like the real deal so I picked it up & flipped it over. Dead center in the middle of the bottom was 830 & a crown hallmark. I paid $90 something after taxes. It weighed in at a little over 27 troy ounces & I sold it for about $700. You'd think a "we buy" guy would know better.

I guess some people still don't equate sterling as being silver?
You are a lucky dog, my local thrifts are like the cities worst garage sale whenever I go.

Hard to tell from pics but that is a mirror...

Wow, great find Frankendime!
I think it's the sticker. I found something similar ONCE, much smaller, with a colored foil "sterling" sticker from a no-name company. I think that if many people see a sticker they assume it's plated -- no actual reading is required. The foil on mine was a little scuffed and faded ,but readable. I couldn't find any other imprints, but ARA gave me $70 for my buck investment.
That's bothered me ever since -- if that tag was completely illegible nobody would ever know it was sterling. Nowadays I spend a lot more time looking for a mark before I put that prospective treasure down. The few PM's I do find is because of that, after all I'm rarely first in line.

The sticker says "Towle, the proudest name in Sterling". To me that doesn't mean it is solid sterling but that it is made by the company Towle. Are there any other hallmarks on the dish ( I cannot enlarge the pics on my PC)? I have seen several Towle sterling pieces and they have all been marked on the metal as such. I am obviously no expert, but just confused. If this is solid silver than I have missed a lot of silver out there.

one of my thoughts too! that would be easy to confirm or deny though, I bet you can find their catalogue online

Finally got a decent pic.. Also stamped weighted and reinforced.

Awesome find, Towel is a good company !! As such that piece is likely worth more than melt.
Keep @ it and HH !!

Awesome! I may have been hesitant to look for a stamp with that label on there. Good eye!
