Possibly they were referring to detecting the area around the outside of a house, or detecting a house site where only a foundation still exists. Detecting inside a house with a standard metal detector would be nearly impossible given all of the nails, screws, wiring, etc. used in construction.

If you want to see what's inside walls and floors without just ripping them up, you could do so with portable imaging units that could be likened to an x-ray, but such units are cost prohibitive for general use.
