Hot shot

Just got a hot shot coil for my XLT, any comments on this coil would be appreciated! Gonna be 3 months till I can sweep! Wanna learn everything I can before I use it! Thanks!

White's doesn't make a "hot shot" coil for anything. You may mean the 5.3 coil for the XLT. Hot Shot coils are made by Tesoro.:coffee2:

It's a Jimmy Sierra 12 inch hot shot 6.95 kHz coil, it's made for the XLT and a few other models with that kHz .

The Hot SHot was made by Applied Creativity, the same folks that made the BigFoot, HotFoot and GoldFoot Coils, among others. They were sold Through Jimmy Sierra (Nomandy), who is the Western States White's distributor. The Hot SHot could give a little extra depth, 1/2" or so over the standard 950 coil on coin sized targets but it could get a few inches more depth on larger targets like Caches. Being larger than the 950, it saw more ground and usually needs a little lower gain or sensitivity and this is why it doesn't get much more depth on the smaller targets.

Thanks for the info, I sure have read all sorts of responses on other sites on how the hot shot gets more depth than the 950. I've heard anywhere from 1/2 inch to 5 inches on quarter sized targets. I guess when the ground thaws I'll just have to see for myself. I hope it gets more depth because I can't get deeper than 4.5 inches with my XLT. Should do better than that, I've tried everything besides the hot shot.

I remember seeing Jimmy Sierra Products in the Western&Eastern Treasures magazine you could only by them form an Authorized Whites Dealer.
So its a whites coil and i have had them before and 12" coils are great for the fields and some woods, great depth 1" maybe 2" over the 950 coil that will also be heavy and in town in parks it will drive you crazy in multi target areas confusing the sound and that dam meter if you look at it,But i loved it in the plowed fields.
In town i used the 5.3 bullseye coil 6" and cranked up the sen. and put tape over that dam meter and had fun. HH

I want more depth with my XLT! It kinda bums me out that much cheaper detectors are finding silver deeper than mine. Wanna maximize my detector to the fullest!

Shadowcat
If you hunt in parks where people gather to throw crap foil, tabs, bullet shells, pry caps you name it ...i will get deeper with a 6"coil than a bigger coil because of the multi targets do you have a smaller coil than 9 1/2 "?
That 6.59khz XLT is a very deep detector and will still run with those big dogs...i used a Whites 6000 di pro Sl 1993 till last year and that XLT will go deeper in the right hands and the right soil...i often use a small coil in a 30'x30'area and then a bigger coil.
I have a Tek G2 the XLT is a depth monster compared to it....But i still get coins At 6" to 8" most aren`t deeper and i don`t look at all them dam #s on the G2 screen looks like a space ship if others around you are getting silver that XLT should eat it up...maybe it time to get the XLT a factory tuneup.

Been detecting 42 yrs and if u can't get but 4-5 in on an XLT u need to have it looked at or tuned up. As was said use the 6in or 5.3 in trash areas as thats the best one to use honest. Matbe u could look at an MXT and see the difference. Was a Whites dealer and multiline dealer for over 20 yrs.Whites are a smooth detectorJust wish the MXT had a adjustable notch on it. jmho. rwdmo

Thanks everyone for the advise! Appreciate all the info!

I don't know your experience level with the XLT, but if you're using the factory programs, you won't get much depth. The factory programs for the XLT were quite mild to ensure a quiet and smooth running machine. If you're very experienced with the XLT and can't get more depth than 4.5 inches, somethings wrong and will need to get checked at the factory. Then again, if you really knew the XLT, you'd know it's not working as it should. If you're only getting 4.5 inches then the Hot Shot isn't your answer.

No I'm not using factory programs, I've only had my XLT since march 12, bought it new, but since then have prob put 250 hrs on it, trying all sorts of stuff, looks like it's getting a trip to whites for a tune up! Thanks for the info!

I use the Hot Shot coil on my DFX, and have achieved very good depths with it over the years, it will also find very small objects, so it's very sensitive to hammered silver coinage I find in the U.K, the smallest being a cut quarter which measured 10mm x 8mm. The best thing I like is the weight as it's extremely light and covers a lot of ground with each swing. I used to have the XLT but traded it in for a DFX when I uncovered a 3500 year old gold hoard. The XLT running at 6.5 KHz was unable to detect it out in the field, where I spent 6 months digging it up. Every time I received a signal with my DFX, I then ran the XLT over, and to my amazement it remained silent. In fact when I switched my DFX from 15 KHz to 3 the same thing happened, so I now run it in 15KHz all the time, and find a lot more, as you will see on the Whites 2013 Calendar. cut quarter.jpg

Wow that's impressive! Thanks! Can't wait to start using it!

I had an XLT. It never gave a correct ID on a dime beyond 4.5". Many will tell you it should detect coins much deeper, which it will. However, some say bouncing ID? That means trash! But in even average soil, the XLT IDs will bounce all over. I had dozens of detectors that did just that, & others bragged about a lock-on ID at 8" or even 12"-16". But others said you have to dig everything. Made me feel like quitting the hobby as I didn't want to dig everything or just get clad.

People told me their secret settings, but I couldn't get anywhere near those without the detector beeping constantly. It was like it was detecting it's own circuitry or something. When I set it to be stable in the house, it could detect a dime at 7.5" in disc mode, 10", maybe 10.5" on a half dollar. But no accurate IDs in ground beyond 4.5" dime, 5" quarter.

I think the detector maybe wasn't meant to get accurate IDs deep in all ground. I sent it in to the factory, they put on a new coil. But it wasn't any better & thought they should notice that.

One XLT user in bad ground area said he gets better depth with the 8" coil than the 9.5" coil.

White's still has this problem with the Prizm/(new) Coinmasters. ID jumps some at 3" & jumps at 5" more, with it being possible to guess probable coin only to 5". Almost all Prizm owners complain about the jumping, but say they get no jumping with the 4x6 DD coil.

One XLT owner said they use the all metal non-motion mode (toggle switch forward), which is about 40% deeper than the motion mode. They said if it seemed round & about coin-sized, they would dig. Best wishes & HH, George (MN)

Thanks for the advise George, sent it in to whites for a tune up, if isn't any better, might have to upgrade to v3i?

Howdy Shadowcat,
When you've gotten the machine back and have had a chance to test it out please post your feelings about how it works after the Whites tech's have had a look at it. Thank you.........63bkpkr

Hey 63bkpkr! Just got it back from whites, the tech said there was a bad/corroded connection in one of the circuits, and he recalibrated the unit, he said the bad connection would really cause the probs I was having, so I was really happy to hear that! All my coils were good so no prob there, just gotta wait a couple months till the ground unthaws! Dying to get out again! Let u know how it's all workin! Thanks!
