thats what i thought coal but would a metal detecter pick up coal?

You know, I'm not really sure how that works, straight coal no.. but this could be something similar with a high mineral content... I don't know.. I might if I had paid attention in geology class...

Does it feel heavy for its size?

Maybe Uranium Ore, You may want to wash your hands after handling it. :o

It looks like it could be some sort of slag. Check to see if there was ever a furnace in the area. I have found a few of these which gave off a strong non-ferris signal. They were lighter than just a rock, much like coal, but had a layering pattern. They were also soft. I took a file to them and they were easily filed away leaving a black surface. There was a furnace in the area where I found mine..

If it had a positive VID it is not hot rock. Coal will give you a positive VID number. See if it had any magnetic characteristics?

Possibly a Meteorite. Lots of meteorites have iron ore and other minerals in them. Just a thought.

I'd say definitely coal. I run into it all the time and it sets off the detector. There are a few different kinds and I don't what they are but the explanation I was given was that some of them contain several trace metals distributed like a net trhoughout the coal. This trace metal net sets of the detector.

check on carborendum.
comes in varius forms
i believe its caused from slag in an iron mill

Correct. Coal sets off my MD all the time while hunting old home sites. Easiest way to find the ash pile and confirm the location of the house.

It looks like the rock i posted a few months ago on the meteorite blog here on t-net. Come to find out after sending it in to be tested ($39.00 dollars later) it was only a piece of iron ore. Check out mine, It's under; could this be like hitting the lottery, in the meteorite section..
