Hosed in the park, I had the key but I couldn't measure up!

Yep sometimes no matter how prepared you think you are, you just going to get hosed!

Today, after working the last two days on honey'do jobs that I've been putting off till the weather was nicer, I got to get out and do a little swinging at a nearby park. It was another absolutely gorgeous day to be outside for any reason, let alone being able to enjoy the hobby of metal detecting. The sun was shining, it was warm (over 80 degrees here in Lexington) and there was a light breeze blowing. The grass at the park had just been mowed yesterday or the day before so it wasn't so tall as to impede my detector. Yessir, it was a fine day to be out and about! And I found a LOT of stuff today. Everything from trash, to treasure and all manner of goodies in between. Why I even found a little doggy's ID tag, imagine that, at the dog-walk park. Go figure.

I found a bunch of change, clad mostly, but one lone wheat penny got dug up as a surprise find for the day. A 1945 vintage.

4-23-08 009wheatface.jpg:4-23-08 010wheatback.jpg

I found keys, four to be precise, but not all in the same place, though two of them were together. I found the end of a garden hose.. yeah.. that's how I got hosed. It rang up on my detector as a quarter or fifty cent piece. I was a little disappointed when I finally popped it out of the ground. Then there was the car...

4-23-08 005car.jpg

...though it was under the grass in the soil, it doesn't look to be very old so it couldn't have been there very long. The car would be only the first of several toys I found today, there was the gun (tiny accessory for an action figure I presume), a rather ugly bug.. a Rhinoceros Beetle I think, and finally, the Hippo!

4-23-08 003hippo.jpg

Sometimes a Timex takes a licking and just doesn't keep ticking. This little watch was over four inches down in the dirt, and I brought some of it home with me as you can see.

4-23-08 012watchface.jpg:4-23-08 013watchback.jpg

Then there was the Crusader.

4-23-08 007tape.jpg

I guess that's the brand name of this measuring tape. Unfortunately it was not exactly complete when I found it. I was left holding only the outer case when I finally unearthed the thing under a gnarly little cedar tree. So you can understand now when I said earlier that I just couldn't "measure up".
Not far from the measuring tape..er.. case, I found this neat little hair clasp. My trusty Prizm Lied To Me! By all indications from my detector the hair clasp was supposed to be a quarter or two.. or a fifty cent piece.. it was Bleepin' for all it was worth... even though the target was a good four to six inches deep. *sigh* I really thought I'd finally found a silver quarter or something. Oh well, it's still pretty neat, after I cleaned the dirt off of it when I got home I could see it better.

4-23-08 011clasp.jpg

...Too bad it's not silver though.

Throughout the day, all four hours of my hunt today that is, I found trash as well as coins. Everything from broken measuring tapes, hose ends, cans, can slaw, pull tabs, bottle caps and other odd bits and pieces of metal to plastic drink bottles and caps. It's going to make me old before my time, I'm sure, all that bending over and picking up garbage to dispose of it, but I can't find it in myself to let it sit there. I guess some people just don't care about their parks. I wonder if their yards and houses are as trashy. *sigh* I saved a great many of the Coke product caps as my wife collects the "Coke Rewards" on line. Of course I generally toss them into a bucket with some water, dishsoap and a little bleach before we handle them to put the codes into the computer.
Oh did I mention that I might have made some new friends today? Well, sort of. I was just swinging away enjoying myself this afternoon when this couple drove up and stopped next to me and asked to talk for a moment. Seems that they were thinking about getting a detector and wanted to know if it was really all that much fun and what was the best detector and so on. I had to tell them that I was still somewhat of a novice myself, but I preferred my detector. They were from Northern Michigan, the U.P. but were in Kentucky visiting friends. I gave them one of my cards that my dear wife made for me last summer, and told them about Treasure Net. They thanked me and we parted ways, they on to wherever they were going and me back to detecting. Cool.
One little annoyance from today, I forgot to put on sunscreen again. *sniff sniff* Do you smell bacon? Well it's not that bad, but I did get a little too much sun I think. I'm not roasting or anything, but I've still got my watch on, even after I've taken it off my arm. Know what I mean? <rolling eyes> Yeah.. got a great Farmer's tan going on here. I'll look GREAT at the beach in a few weeks! NOT!
Well here's the pics of everything.. and then some..

I hope you all get out and get your "fix" soon. Have fun and as always..

Happy Hunting Everyone !

I love that Hippo. . . that's what makes this such a great hobby.

I thought the hair clip was just another piece of junk, and it probably is still, but it has all this beaded scroll work and the stones in it. Not at all like the cheap "clamps" I find now and then or the proliferous plastic variety that so many little girls loose in the parks and playgrounds. As for the hippo, the first thing I heard from my wife was "It's not Christmas." <laughing>
We have a bit of a running joke around our house. One year my wife thought she was being cute when I asked her what she wanted for Christmas she said a Hippopotamus.. like in the song "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.." Well she got a stuffed hippo that year.. along with her other gifts of course. And there have been some small or stuffed hippo under the tree, or in her stocking every year since then too. <grin> Almost ten years running now. So when I showed her the hippo I found yesterday, that's why she said.. But it's not Christmas.

LOL early Christmas I guess! Loved that story!

I always find it entertaining to hear people's stories like that. I hate to think how much weight we put on our grandpa since every year when we would hand him a present he would ask "Is it good to eat?" We used to spend weeks baking cookies to put in boxes for Grandpa because we wanted to be able to say yes because we thought that was what he wanted! It became a very treasured tradition.....somehow I think your wife would truly treasure every hippo she gets too!

Did you try to call the number on the dog tag?

Actually, Muddy Waters, No I have not tried to call the number on the tag. I hadn't even considered it till you mentioned it. I mean I did find the tag burried in the dirt, under the grass, so it's been there a while. I suspect it was probably lost where I found it, somewhere between the entrance gates to the dog park and the owner's vehicle parked in the parking area. I'm sure "Lexie" has a new tag by now. I may call the number just for the hell of it. <grin> If I do, I'll post that information here as well. Thanks for reading!

I found a tag with a phone number in Raleigh, NC years ago. I tried the number but someone else lived there. I thought it would be a cool thing to try. You know how dogs become a member of the family, perhaps the dog is dead. They may really appreciate it. Take care, Muddy

I've still not gotten around to trying to call the number on the recently dug up dog tag. Perhaps this weekend when I'm off work I'll have more time. As for the titles to my posts.. stories.. adventures in metal detecting.. <grin> Well I know from personal experience that if something has a "hook" or a catchy title I'm more likely to investigate further.. (translation.. READ further).. than if it has some mundain or bland title. Like.."Look at what I found today." Now how likely is someone to click on that title and read the story? <shrug> I don't know, I might myself sometimes, but only if there's not something else that catches my eye first. Know whut ah mean Vern?

<grin>

Interesting dog tag. I would love to go back there and detect. There is great history around your area. I graduated from Transy many years ago. We us to go out to where the original man of war memorial was before they built the museum/ farm. I have never been there. Spent a lot of time at Spindletop and High Bridge. That was definetly my youth.

How long have you lived there?

And you live in Colorado now? Boy.. from the rolling blue grass hills to the Rocky Mountains.. that's a big change.
I've lived here in Central Kentucky all of my life. Born and raised so to speak. Yeah, Transylvania University is quite a fixture herebouts. And I remember the original statue location of Man O' War, out on Russel Cave road at Old Iron Works road. High Bridge has been a late night destination on many a summer's night as well. I've only been out to Spindletop a few times though. Sounds as if we've covered a lot of the same ground. As for the dog park out at Masterson Station Park, it's not all that old. It's been there for maybe 8 years if that long. It's adjacent to the Lions Blue Grass Fairgrounds.
I've only been detecting for a little over a year now and so far I've only detected parks and playgrounds for the most part. I do however want to start making inroads towards getting permission to hunt a lot of the older homelots and sites around town and this part of the state. I'm working on a deal now to possibly get permission to detect on one of the oldest continuously operated hospitals west of the Appalachian mountains. From having been here for however long you were here you might know the place, at least in passing. Eastern State Hospital. Originally a "Sanitarium" over a hundred years ago, it's still being used as a mental health care facility. For a while longer anyway, the Kentucky State Government just approved funding and plans to build an all new facility to replace it. Anyway, it's a very historically significant site... and to my knowledge NO ONE has EVER detected there. *sigh* Oh well.. here's hoping! I'll certainly post any finds if I get permission to hunt, here on Treasure Net of course.<grin>

Happy Hunting !

Re: Hosed in the park, I had the key but I couldn't measure up!

Frodov:

I actually went from Long Island, to Lexington, to Colorado.

We have hit the same locations in Lexington. I haven't heard the name Russel Cave Road in years. So I see that you do remember where the original MOW statue was. We use to bring a bottle of wine and some bread and Cheese and just relax by the statue. There were even some UK students who hung out there. There was another place that we would go to where there were caves that went in to the side of a mountain. The caves went on for a awhile and inside of them were army surplus materials, bandages etc.. Was that near High Bridge? I also remember a town called Dog Patch. There were signs leading up to it for miles.

As for the state hospital, if it is the one in Lexington I know it. I think it is. I did my undergrad work in Psychology at Transy and I had a senior seminar with a prof named Richard (Dick) Honey where the "O" is hard. He was head of the department than. We had to go out there several sessions. I'll never forget it. The other Prof was Travis Rawlings. His son was my friend and he is now in New Mexico.

I think that there was a bar where you could go drinking called Hall's. I forgot where that was, but it was out of town.

I just started detecting and am still not sure if I like it yet. I want to see what I can find out in this area of the country. I left Lexington on my way to Ca. and never got past Colorado. It is a much younger state in terms of U.S. population so you cant find much beyond the late 1800.

Here is a quiz for you to find out when I was there. Remember C.M. Newton who retired from UK as the head athletic director? My first year at Transy was his last year there. I had no idea who he was or how good he was. I was the only freshman that he asked to go out for the B-ball team that was not on Scholarship. I turned him down. Eventually he found out that I turned down three scholarships in L.I. He was a very good man. He left there and went to Alabama and was replaced by Lee Rose who eventually left Transy for Division one and in his first year took UNC Charlotte to the final four followed by him taking Purdue to the final four just a year or so later. He was a great coach.
