Hi all, does anything about this horseshoe jump out as a characteristic that might help put an age on it? Found about 2" deep in Texas.

Thoughts on cleaning it? Too far gone to try?

Thank you!
Jason

It has one square tack left in it...

I have no idea how old it is but The horseshoe is a good candidate for electrolysis bath. after all the crud is off, you may see a brand name to help you date it. electrolysis is a great way to clean iron objects and easy to learn. practice now so when you find something really nice you'll know how to proceed.

I'm no horseshoe eggspurt, so I have no idea about date, good luck with that.

The Mr. brought home a milk crate full of horseshoes he found in the Everglades.
They looked about like yours does.
I cleaned some of them in a 5 gallon bucket with vinegar & a metal brush.
I had to let them soak a day or 2, but they cleaned up, to almost new.
A few of ours still had the nail in them, too.
Welcome to Tnet! :cat:

Don't see anything odd other than the nail. I think it's a factory shoe rather that a smith made shoe. I would paint it with a linseed oil/minerail spirits mix and hang it on the barn door.
