Horse tree rings or log pulls?

When I was a logger for St. Regis, we stored logs on an ajacent lake in huge rafts. What you have there is what held the outer perimeter of logs together, forming the raft, and also used for towing. Because it is an age old tool, and where you found it, it could very well have been used by the military during the civil war for any number of uses.

I'm not familiar with a set of logging dogs , or grabs , in that configuration .

I think RickyD put the green check on it .

Could have been pressed into service in war time to anchor horse lines in a camp , I'm thinkin .

Thanks. Should have mentioned that they were found in wooded areas in the SC Lowcountry. We don't have any freshwater rivers in the immediate area where I am at but we do have a surplus of saltwater.
