Looks as if it might be part of the "bit" that goes in the horses mouth...not too heavy so it could be.

I beleive it fastened to the hames and the check lines went through the oblong hole the lines is the
long pieces of leather you used to control the amimal's either horses or mules hooked to a plow
or wagon similar to reins on a horse only longer.

What you have there is a Harnes Fitting. A double loop copper alloy harness fitting. The smaller loop is for attachment and the larger loop is a rein guide. The latter is designed to allow the free passage of any buckles fitted to the reins.

I cant find a pic of one online using any of the names suggested so far. There doesnt seem to be any at modern horse tack sites either so they must not be used anymore?
I know there has been many posted here in the past but dont have search so no luck there either.

I just said it is a check line guide or rein guide in my last post.
As Okie said , when running work animals with a harness the reins are long lines called called check lines .reins are short and used if you are sitting on the animal is my understanding.
silver searcher provided a link to pics of some.
I did not get a pic of the one i seen on a harness, didnt have cam with me, but they are attached to sides of harness to guide the check lines ,as okie and silversearch stated.
Thanks for other links BigC.

BC,there have been several pics posted on here before(really good ones)but I will be darned if I can find them!
They are attached to the sides of a hames,or neck yoke to keep them up and from getting tangled

Ditto

So "gag loop" is the incorrect term? I guess this is a rare example of a mistake that has been repeated many years here on TN. Its a wonder it wasnt corrected earlier. Thanks.
