Horse Bit? How old?

I was at a house built in the 1700s that a customer of mine invited me too. I found this. His father was born in 1914 and said no Horses were ever in that part of the property where this was dug. It seems to be brass to me. Any Ideas on how old and if this is a horse bit? I posted a pic with my TRX Pro Pointer for size reference.
