Found thi son old farm site,, wondering if there was a way to tell how old it is?

Really it's hard to say from my end. Back in my horse years, I saw bits very similar still in use. Could be early history, but it could be as late as the 1970's when I was working with horses - though with the corrosion I'd say that it probably dates prior to the advent of automobiles.

Looks hand forged, therefore it may not be modern but they still Smith these bits. The best way to get a date range is by other artifacts found at the site. Collectively they all contribute to dating the site and relics.

I was living on a horse farm making $30 a week mucking stalls, handling 19 Morgan horses. Traveled the horse show circuit. And then apprenticed as a farrier for just less than a month. In 1973 they were still Smithing shoes, bits, whatever tack was needed custom made.

Then I got out and found a real job! I was single, 24, and the horse circles sure were popular with the ladies :laughing7:
