Getting a burl off of an old oak tree.
This guy was forging away at 50ft.
Wasn't concerned one bit I was going to cut his garden down.

It's a certain Horntail wasp, that that don't sting. 4X the length of a Yellow Jacket but not threatening in any way. I saw another flying around and the attachment was about 6 inches long. (Different type)
The stinger is actually called a ovipositor for laying eggs, which lay dominate for 1-2 yrs then the larva eat their way out of the wood.
 

Oh, I thought it was a cicada killer.
I just found the name of the other wasp, here is a image off the web.

The female long-tailed giant ichneumon wasp has a breathtakingly long ovipositor. It's harmless to people.

What a pretty little wasp!

You haven't been stung by a wasp until you encounter one of our local Tarantula Hawks. These wasps have more pain in their sting than just about any other insect on earth. I see these every day in my yard.

Here's one dragging away a tarantula. Read the linked article if you want to know what the wasp is going to do to the tarantula. :o
