Here is one of my treasured pieces. It is in the image of a Barn owl. It took many years for me to aquire it. Its an early form of Hopewell pipe with the straight platform. Found over 100 years ago. IMG_4108_1.jpgIMG_4109_1.jpg

Sorry but I can’t put those photos on the web. There is a unique drilling process used for Hopewell pipes. I don’t feel it would be responsible to do so. I have only seen this drilling process on authentic examples. Keep the fakers guessing!

In my 50 yrs. of hunting and collecting artifacts, that has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard imo.

What is the material on a owl like that? The providence a hundred years ago is a no brainer........

It’s made of grey pipestone from either Pennsylvania or Ohio. It’s hard to tell because of the heavy patination.

makes me wonder who the faker is....

This guy has been posting some world class artifacts from my state that I enjoy seeing, don't be pissing him off so he stops. I for one can see a reason for his statement about not showing the drilling there are far more fake pipes than real so if one of the diagnostics of authenticity so be it.

I've tried posting info on the Tremper Mound pipes from Scioto County, Oh. I can't seem to do it probably because I'm a computer dimwit. Look it up and you'll see some fantastic examples of Hopewell pipes.

Tremper is about a 25 minute drive from my house. Years ago you could stop at the house and they would let you walk around the field. Couldn't really see much because they grass was always high but a buddy of mine used to hunt a field right next to it and had some nice Hopewell pieces from there. You can't get it on it now with the new owners.

Here's a link to the Tremper Pipes.

Interestingly enough, my wife’s great grandfather was William Tremper. My mother in law lived on the property for a time. The Tremper family ( Richard and William Tremper) donated a lot of fine relics to the Portsmouth library. She still has some of the pieces, but most importantly she has a colorful illustrated book detailing William and Richards first dig into the mound in august 1905 I believe was the date. William wrote the diary and was a bit of an artist, he drew masterful works of the relics they found that day. It was there intent to dig before the fledgling Ohio Arch people showed up, which he had given permission. They encountered burials only feet from the top of the mound. One Indian grasped a sandstone tablet which my mother in law still has. This and other encounters are wonderfully detailed in his little book diary “elephant Mound”. I will try to get pics of the book. I would love to own it someday.

Thanks for the material ID. I thought it was pipestone from Ohio. Tremper mound area near Portsmouth. I live on a farm along Ohio Brush Creek about 30 miles as the crow flies from the mounds. I found a pipe this spring........but it didn't look anything like that. Keep posting your family artifacts, me and Steve want to see them.
