Hopewell Culture Cores and Blades

Looks like Rock Candy to me. Is Hopewell equal to what we call the Dallas culture right before De Soto wandered by? Very pretty material and tools. Makes studying that stuff fun I bet.

There are some really nice colors of flint in that collection. I enjoy the Hopewell artifacts as well. Those pieces pay tribute to the their everyday life of survival. Thanks for the post.

Thanks guys. It seems like the Hopewell people quarried the finest gem grade materials off the ridge, those guys knew where to find the good stuff.

Tn., I think the Hopewell culture was around 1000 years or more(mid to late woodland) before the Dallas culture from Tn. and Va., just my best guess I may be off. Apparently the Dallas people moved from nw Tn. into areas of sw Va. There are many mounds in that area and alot of really interesting artifacts like shell masks, gorgets, and effigies that were attributed to the Dallas culture there. If you're ever in the Clinch valley area of Va. I highly recommend the museum in Saltville. It's small but packed with outstanding local artifacts, pre Clovis - historic, they have some fine Dallas phase exhibits.

Now, those are just pretty! Those pieces you call blades, I never seem to find anything like that. Or maybe I'm just not recognizing them as such, so I appreciate the look-see. Nice, nice!

Here's one I've posted before that I've never got any info on. It was found a few hundred feet from a middle woodland burial mound, but that don't mean much because it's got a little bit of everything on it. I'm thinking this one is "Crab Orchard" (Illinois Hopewell)

Enjoy, and tell me if any of you have seen one like this.

Nice looking piece SoIll. The size, and flaking of your piece make me think it's earlier than Hopewell. I like how it's worked to a meridian ridge.

Thanks naturegirl, the correct term for these small flakes driven off the cores is bladelets. Most have usewear along the edges and they were used as quick tools for cutting plants, lashings, etc. They are still razor sharp.

Very nice! I have a couple points I have found made from Ridge that have the blue color. Would love to find one that had the red. I have found alot of "waste" that was red but never a completed peice. Thanks for sharing

I think the closest we have to a nice material like that would be Horse Creek. But it does not even come close to those beauty's. I just keep coming back and looking at them.
Deer are jumping into my freezers so maybe I will be back before long for a relaxing hunt :icon_sunny:

Those are really nice Ryan. I have one site where I have found quite a few Hopewell Bladelets, but I have yet to find any nice cores.
