Maybe you hammer it into a telephone pole as a hand grip/foot hold for climbing...

Just a guess...

Could be like DCMatt said, but maybe for use in trees to climb to hunting stand/platform. The flat part from pounding would be to drive it out and remove it.

If y'all look at what part is Hammered, it would not aid in driving this thing into something, In fact, jist the opposite, it would knock it out of something.See what i mean ?

could it be driven into a tree by pounding on the curved part and then removed by pounding on the flattened part?

It has been id'd as a turpentine hack.Here is a pic of another style of one with the herty pot,(used to catch the sap).Hereis also a pic of another style with handle.
