Been dctecting since june of 2004 with my 10 year old son, since then we have found A total of 1289 coins. We have found 195 quarters, 295 dimes, 34 nickles and765 penneys. Out of these, there were 4 silver quarters, 3 silver dimes, 1 war nickle and 20 wheat penneys. We have also found 4 silver rings, 1 silver cross and 1 gold ring with 11 fake diomands. 8 boy scout neckerchief slides,7 keys,3 tokens and 2 locks AND A LOT OF JUNK. The dollar amount for the coins was 88.60. We use a bounty hunter from Radio Shack, it has the digital number screen and that helps a little bit for not digging the junk.We live in Johnston County N.C. and was wondering why all the places we go nobody else medal detects it. We hunt schools, parks, ballfields and a scout camp.We are starting to hunt old vacant houses on the farms around here, but there is so much trash around them I get discouraged and move back to the parks, because we have so little time.I know there is a lot of old stuff around because SMITHFIELD was founded in 1777, and the scout camp is only 1 mile from Bentonville the place where the civil war battle was fought. Do I need to get a better detector.

Congrats on discovering MDing!! And on that huge amount of coins found. Thats probably more than your detector cost. Very cool. My suggestion is, keep finding coins like you have been, than take it and buy a new mid range detector. Whites and garrett, make nice detectors in the 200-300 dollarr range. Than let your son have the rafio shack detector. The new detector will really help around those old house sites.

Opinion from a newbie:

I would say you have a good ratio of dimes, nickels and quarters compared to the number of pennies you find.

I have a Bounty Hunter 202. It is good at discriminating. It will definately throw out iron, and all bottle and can tabs, but it comes at the expense of also throwing out gold. One thing I don't like about my BH is it doesn't get me the depth I want.

It is interesting that the homesites are what frustrate you. It seems like some of the old artifacts you will find there are more valuable than the vast majority of coins. E-bay consistently confirms to me that one man's junk is another's treasure.

I think you will find as you move up the price line in metal detectors that you will get more depth, More target information, and more accuracy on the information it is giving you. The little bit I have seen of different metal detectors is that none are perfect. Everybody has to dig junk to find the good stuff.

Do you have an auto notch on your BH? If so, put it on auto notch. Put the discrimination on all metal (lowest setting). Put Sensitivity at 1:00. Don't bother digging broken singals. Somebody showed me that setting and it seems to have really cut down on the chatter and false targets.

Sounds like yer hooked alright.
Do you need a better metal detector? Sure :) You'll end up with a more costly machine sooner or later, so why not get it now?

I have 2 Radio Shack machines sitting in my shed that are now gathering dust. I had fun with them, but when I decided to retire, I bought some better machines.

With the two I purchased, I gained depth, discrimination, ease of use (on my back) and am picking up a lot more coins.

Go for it ;D

I might add one more thing before you move up to a better detector. This is a hobby- We do this for the fun not the money(well most of us.) Do not feel that you must first pay off your detector or accumulate enough found money to buy a new one. Besides it's difficult for a lot of us to part with our special finds.

Have fun
George

Yep, George is right. Do you need a better detector? Well sounds like you're already having fun and if you decide to make it some kind of passion, then you're probably gonna get some better detector(s)

But as long as you're having fun, carry on! Happy hunting!

Get you a better detector. one that will help you weed out some of the trash. And get back to those old home sites. Start looking for the old clothes lines and start picking out those old silver coins. Good Luck.
I found a old clothes line at a 1920s house the other day we cleared the brush and are still working on getting the coins. So far about 15 wheat penny's and 4 mercury dimes. and a couple war nickles and I do not think we are done yet.

im new and use a bh time ranger and hunt mostly old home place would love to hear from a person with this same model on settings i should use.. right now i concentrate on hearing a signal pinpointing and digging and finding it. im so new that finding what im digging for is a hoot.

Im sure paying ones dues is part of the equation...any suggestions way back in the woods here

Welcome to the hobby, Shooter.
You and your son have done exceptionally well with your finds. Yes, a little more expensive detector should give you a little more depth and discriminating ability. I prefer Garrett and Fisher detectors, but that is just a personal preference. My first detector, over thirty-five years ago, was a Bounty Hunter, if memory serves me right. Garrett has just come out with a new Ace 250 that I've been hearing a lot of good things about. I bought one a week ago, to use as a backup machine, and I really like it. I enjoy hunting the old homesteads because there is such a variety of items to dig. You will dig some junk but you will also dig some good targets. The main thing is that you and your son are having a good time. If you decide to upgrade your detector, you can either trade in the Bounty Hunter or use it as a backup detector. Congratulations on an excellent start in the hobby. Keep us posted on your finds.

Be Proud! You & your son are "HOOKED" on somethin GOOD! Just look at our society today & think of the great example you are setting. Not to mention the fun you are having & just wait for the day when you make a BIG find. Spotz

i would not tell you to or not to some on this forum finds wonderf finds more than anyone else with just a cheapo so if it works for you, it works for me.

Hey Ranger Ricky.. I tried to answer your PM, but keep getting a PM message limit notice of some kind.. Not sure if your mailbox if full, or something else is wrong..
Just wanted to let you know I was not ignoring your message.. Just can't answer it!!

Hey,I just want to thank everybody on all of the replys. I have been out of town for a couple of days and I have not been able to thank everybody. The bounty hunter that I have been using is a touch pad model, the first three numbers are iron, then pulltabs-nickles,then the next would be zinc, then dime, ect. I usually keep the machine on the number 4 spot and just dig a 34 only because that is usually a nickle. Any other number is ALLAWYS trash. Then when the beeping gets so bad I always go to the dime setting. And go from there.I think the model was around 300.00 dollars. Went out yesterday and hit a new park that was opened somewhere in the early 70s, found around 4.80 in clad. no old coins.HHing to everone. SHOOTER

I use a BH Pioneer 101, which has provided better results than I expected when I bought it (used, for $40.00 on eBay). I have found that the key to success with a machine like this is to really listen to what the machine is telling you. At first, it was hard resisting the temptation to dig those broken signals, but as I spent more and more time digging rusty nails or pulltabs, I disciplined myself into skipping the broken signals, and digging only the real solid targets. I set it on tone mode, with the discrimination only at 9 or 10 oclock on the knob, and go from there. Clad coins, pennies and silver register solid hits in the high tone range, while gold and nickels register solid hits in the low tone range. Anything else, such as broken tones (tones that are a combination of high and low) or ghost tones are junk 99% of the time. It just takes time and patience to really learn all of the nuances of your machine. In all, I like my BH, and although I am upgrading to a Garrett ACE250 soon, I do NOT plan on relagating the Pioneer 101 to the closet. Good luck, and HH!
