Somebody always eventually asks, so I'll answer in advance:
That type of horsebit gag-chain dates from the early 1900s or a little earlier, and is still being sold today. The photo posted by Taz was made by our fellow What-Is-It forum ID-helper Creskol, from his copy of the 1907 Pierson-&-Hough mailorder catalog, if I recall correctly from his long-ago post of it. None of that type of gag-chain have shown up in any civil war photos of people on horseback, neither soldiers nor civilians.

I found this back in the late 70's or the early 80's. I was living in an old farmhouse surrounded by cornfields at the time and found many coins and relics.I once found a US buckle lying right on top of the plowed field. It's now the subdivision called Governors green...or at least it was the last I knew.

Here is a complete one I dug in 2019 for future reference.

I hunted the back side of that farm ,the library sits in front of it . you missed a georgia button and 3 block I buttons. plus a boat load of bullets. glad you got some relics out of there. I really like the chain you found .
you're right that was many years ago. I hunted along RTE-3 for 30 years and can tell you there was a time I would dig way more relics than trash . do you remember billy marrs garage ? he just died this week . when they built the gym behind his shop I found 3 us buckles in the first 3 holes dug. oh those were the days when you went to the truck to empty your pouch half way thru the hunt.when they built governor's green people came in campers from far and wide to dig relics and stay all weekend . everyone found something.
it's still governor's green all that remain is the small pond and silo.
