After work I headed over to a newer permission...120 acre wooded parcel that stretches along the upper banks of Lake Michigan. The land has been hunted heavily over the last century so I usually dig up a zillion headstamps with the occasional coin mixed in.

Today I tackled a spot that I had not previously been...when I started hearing growling iron sounds I immediately became excited because the area was a significant distance from any road or trail. After I unearthed the first knife I knew that I had just stumbled upon the site of some fur trader...I dug for 2 hours straight and barely made a dent in all the targets. Crazy. Silver brooches. Hawks bells. Iron grape shot ball. Knives. Mouth harp. Trade ring. Lock plate. Buttons. Earring.

Crazy site! What a mix. Is the awl copper ,or iron ,or steel...
A roach belly in there. The other blades should be identifiable with some research.
What great recoveries. Congrats.

The awl is a copper-culture artifact... Oddly enough it was buried in the middle of all of it.

While not wanting to know ( really) the site. The history around the straits blows away my area closer to the mid lower.
Such a mix is wild. Hooks for snelling , the ramrod thimble ( pinned) , trade silver and more modern artifacts with a copper awl in there suggests all kinds of theories . Maybe some family heirlooms were handed down ,or cached on a site occupied seasonally over time at first and Euro trade followed suit due to traffic and location.

Lots of traffic East and West a long time for varied reasons. Some harsh ones at times. Forts factored eventually.
If that awl and silver could talk more........though they still might....

I was not all that surprised to see the awl there.. I have found about 10 other pieces within a 200 yard radius.. :)

Best site ever!
With "several" quality fur trade artifacts and all the trade silver; you just blew my mind!
I hope you find more of all that great stuff and this thread doesn't go unnoticed.

That's a great hunt for recoveries, congratulations on the silver. It's one of those items that hold a special spot up on top of the dusty want list. You really got a great variety of finds in the recoveries, certainly a hunt that will be remembered for sometime to come.

Congratulations on the nice finds! :occasion14:
