Holiday in Cuba

Greetings! I am new here and new to the world of MDing.
Does anyone know if there are restrictions to bringing a Metal Detector into Cuba? I envision staying at Varadero in a resort and combing the beach for jewelry, and with any luck an old Spanish dubloon.
Any ideas? Info??

PS: I am not focused on just Varadero, my questions applies to all of Cuba.

How are you making the trip? Plane,Boat, Swim? It probably depends on your contacts there,if they can obtain some kind of pass for you or maybe there is a contact here on the mainland you know.I would definitly find out before you arrive there.Seeing someone with a md on a beach might jar the wrong people's curiousity.I would have an official 'ok pass' with me.Anyways,hope you enjoy your trip,Cuba used to be 'the place' many yrs ago.Too bad it still isn't.Maybe you'll see Robt Duvall,I understand he spends time there for the dancing.Have fun!

I would be flying in. Any clue where to find some info?? I would not want the customs there to seize the detector upon landing. Furthermore, if it is allowed on the island, then where do I get permission "IF" I need permission??

I wouldn't even take your detector with you ,unless you have written permission from one of the government ministries there.
Remember,Cuba is still a communist dictatorship,and the last thing you want to do is to see the insides of one of their jails.
It would ruin your whole vacation !!

Call James Cason of the US Intrests Section in the Swiss Embassy in Havana. He can tell you all you need to know or put you in touch with the correct people and agencies. 011-537-833-3551 through 3559.

If that doesn't work, call the Cuban Embassy in Georgetown, Guyana. But take what they tell you with a grain of salt! Lots of foreign Consulates like to you think that they know everything about eveything. I would only ask them what Cuban agency you need to contact to gather your information from the source.
