Went out for a couple hours Friday afternoon to a site that dates from 1750's to the late 1800's. A Confederate Veteran lived here after the WBTS. Found a couple flat buttons and some other items I'm still examining. But I thought I'd post this alone, as it's my first shield nickel - and it's holed. Unfortunately, it's a bit too toasted to pull a date off of it. The little patch I've been working is just peppered with iron, but the AT Pro with the small coil is really perfect for that kind of environment. Thanks for looking.

In a lot of cases Richard, a well known relic hunter and dealer told me that they strung coins on a wire to keep them from falling out of small pocket tears. In this case, I think someone wore that one around their neck due to the hole size. Nice find, Q.

Great find there, and congrats on your first. Most of those coins that are dug are dateless. Those dates were tiny, and they require careful cleaning in order to read the dates legibly.

Congrats on your first shield nickel, even holed it's nice!

Way to go on your first shield nickel Richard. I always like finding holed coins. I think they are more interesting and must have meant a lot to someone back in the day.
Nice find,
MM

Thanks Q - that's what I was thinking.

Thanks Buckle - I strained my eyes with a magnifying glass until I got a headache trying to get a date.

Thanks I had always heard the same thing and have found several at CW sites , When you consider that at that time 5 0r 10 cents was a good sum, let alone a quarter or half dollar any way to secure it was important
