Found these 9 holed musket balls in the same hole. I was using the XP Deus HF round coil and the target sounded like big iron. I wanted to just get it out of the way so dig the target and found a musket ball. Checked the hole and the iron sound was still there. Dug another musket ball and checked the hole and the iron sound was still there. I then started using my pinpointer and recovered the rest of them. There was no big iron. All of them were holed. Are these are repurposed lead weights or just musket balls? ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1516218892.225709.jpg

I agree with DND, net weights. They do not look round in your pics and pulled balls don't have holes going all the way through them. Not necessarily for a cast net, could be from another type of net too.

Are the holes all the way thru?
Can we have a diameter of the ball?

I have seen Rev War balls from the Savannah area with holes and copper hand forged nails all the way through them, I believe they were used in cannons. That is just one possibility.

I will send some better pictures when I get back to my home office on Friday.

The holes are all the way through on each one.

Yes Smokeythecat (AKA XP Deus HF Elliptical Confederate Buckle smacker), these are from Savannah and I have probably dug about 30 from this site and they all had holes all the way through just like these. I had assumed that they were repurposed fishing net weights, but after finding 9 in one hole the other day it got me thinking that they may be something different.

Yeah I have dug my share of those holey musket balls on a old homesite that's close to a river.. I believe they were made for fishing net weights.. I dug close to 50 or maybe even more.. I think they were musket balls turn into fishing weights..

I just watched a YouTube video by PalmettoDigger where he found one of these musket balls and called it a spindle for threading cotton. Maybe that’s what it is?
