While hiking today I came across lots of boulders and rocks with holes going through them. They are perfectly round and go all the way through the rock. Any body know what these could be? Thanks!

Core sample hole and the one that goes through looks to be in a slab the sloughed off of another piece.

Near a creek or river? I've seen post holes from old mill sites that were bored into rock like that

It's near a creek, there are lots of boulders in the middle of the woods. Could it be Indian campground?

indians would not bore holes in rock like that.

They look like holes that were drilled for blasting the rock. I have several in my yard that I brought home from a site where they were blasting to make a retention pond.

Yep got holes in rocks all over the place where they strip mine for coal, or...

there's two boulders in the woods where i used to consume beer as a youth that have holes in them like that one still has what looks like a large chisel or spike protruding from it, i believe they were used to break or blast them -- years back when the carnival was in town that had an elephant chained to the protruding spike.
