I found this today at an ancient site - have not removed or touched it - but am very curious what it might be - I am thinking the base of a small statue - or cross - not sure I want to - (or can!) touch it.

Any guesses before I get to the bottom of it? It's just sitting there!

You certainly have more restraint than I have. Ancient sites often have modern sites atop or near them and this one doesn't look to have been there long. Looks to be a poured form, like mortar. But you know...there's only one way to find out.....

Ancient site, protected I assume? Hands off kinda place?... and maybe in a country where you don't just get your wrist slapped?... as based on the vegetation I think this is located in, well I won't say (I messing with you Marc).
Anyway, it looks a bit like a chunk of a core sample, but I hope you're able to find its something more exciting.

It might be the grinding stone for the axe that cut the heads off that are buried nearby.
