Found this about 8 inches in the ground under an old tree's root. The black is leather with buttons. The metal is either copper or steel. No markings or letterings noted on the artifact. Found in areas of Revolutionary War and historical lands.
 

The specific form/construction of the brass (or copper) rivets is a 20th-Century style of rivet. The object probably is a chunk of horse-harness, perhaps as old as the first 1/3rd of the 20th-Century or perhaps somewhat later. That's pretty old, but not old enough to be a "war relic."

That's what left of a large snap. The leather was likely a long driving rein and they were always attached with snaps.
