Frank, I was looking at again the other day :o, I see what looks like traces of wood grips is that correct ??? ? The wrapping on the grip has me puzzled scratching my head ??? you said the wrapping is some sort of cloth, I guess with the right type soil conditions it would have been preserved to it's present condition :dontknow:. I don't think is modern as in 1900's . Maybe a 1800's trade item that could be possiable. I don't guess we could talk you into more photos of the blade that might give a clue. It is interesting and gives you something to think about.

Sure I can get some pics of the blade,I am fixin to head out real fast. But as soon as I get back I will get them. Also some better pics of whats left of the handle.

Ok after looking at it more and some light dry brushing...I think it was a trade item. There are lines scratched into both sides. The bare metal looks like it was wrapped, then a wood handle was added. To finish with more wrapping(mayhaps red)

Alright theres what I have....What do ya'll think.....Thanx for lookin & happy huntin

Frank, I beleive you may have a mid 1850's -1870's trade type knife. The blade look's sort of cheaply made not a real high quality type blade, like say a modern made blade would be. By modern I am talking about after 1900. It is a interesting item for sure. I wonder if if it would be possiable if you could play jigsaw puzzle and get those bits and pieces of the handle fitted back together. It is interesting.

Most def. a histiric era trade piece ,looks mid 1800's ,looks like they wrapped it with some type of "white man cloth" and added some sort of homemade glue ,pine sap, asphaltium, etc. Thats the reason why it still has some cloth on it,you can tell the blade has been hammered and shaped from its form and shape. As for the incisions dont know what to tell ya there, likely indian marks of some sort.Real good condition for its age,the handle is basicly "firewood",as it is beyond restoration(i would keep it though)real nice find if ya ask me! :headbang:

Now that I look back on it...What a good day that was....The knife, net weight, and the cool lil base.....Thanx for the help and comments every one.

Hate to keep bringing this up,but it's buggin the heck outa me...I think I see a makers mark...A 1/2 sun...you can sorta see it in pic 7-8......I have been trying to research it...not much luck yet...

Maybe you should try posting in the 'what is it " section for help with the makers mark, there are some sharp people there...
