Yes, I sure do think that’s a counterfeit. Do you think it’s supposed to be a Carlos III?
I seem to remember reading an article that said that counterfeits like these were made by the Royal Mint in large quantities in an effort to destabilize the Spanish economy. (Does anyone else have more details or a link to an article about that?)

Is it magnetic? If it's rusting that could mean its a contemporary counterfeit. You should look into how the Royal Mint produced counterfeit Spanish coins and see if it indeed corresponds to this one, if it does that'll be much more interesting.

I tested to see if it is magnetic 🧲 and it is not.

This coin has has a lot of wear and tear. Highly circuited. If you look closely where the coin is holed, you will notice what appears to be rust showing through the silver. Kind of odd for a silver coin.
It sure has seen a lot of travels, well done on the save.
Is it actual rust?
Copper-or a direct result of iron leakage from a near by item?

Sure looks plated though from the photo-(but a tad out of focus)

One would think that when it was holed, it would of been discovered it was a counterfeit, and not circulated/used for such a long period of time.

Is it possible some kind of iron chain link rotted away causing the rust to stick to the coin , like of someone had it on a chain?
