I have an 8lb chunk of quartz that has visible gold laced and strung throughout the rock. A Falcon MD-20 has verified this at the GPAA gold show in Vegas 2 yrs ago. Does anybody know where in the pac nw I can take it to get a scientific analysis done to determine gold content and or value? It's my "retirement rock" I hope, and have no immediate plans of parting with it, but would like to know it's value

Btw: it came from a stream below a very historic mining district in Wa state. I assume it to be a chunk of high grade that fell out of a mining cart in the 1860's and has spent the last 150+ yrs working it's way downstream. I don't really want to slab it unless that's the only way to get value out of it. Some club members think it has a knob of pure platinum protruding from one side as well.

You are either going to sell it whole after a specific gravity test, slab it (most profitable) or crush it. Good Luck

That's what I was going to suggest, I've seen some really cool looking gold with the rock removed that way. I was in the local gold buyers when a lady came in with some nice looking ore with lots of gold showing, and he wouldn't buy it. Said he buys gold, and not rocks. I've always been told specimen gold like that is worth more. Other than that, I've got no idea what it's worth, but it would be worth a lot if I owned it.

...there is a fine line there Bosn.......certain,specie gold is worth more .....sometimes,but its in the eye of the collector.A rock with a little gold showing, will not fetch as much as a rock with more gold showing even if the specific gravity test shows there is equal gold in both specimens.Like Terry suggested often slabbing is the most profitable, when you have a piece with little showingrock.jpg

All valuable info. Thx gentlemen. Still looking for a place in the NW that is trustworthy and can do scientific analysis tho. Anyone have suggestions?

Marvin Tanner at Gem State Gold and Silver (Gemstategoldandsilver.com) has a xray spectrometer, he's in Boise, Idaho. I had some silver tested by him last year.

I also want to mention....your piece appears to be river worn....Placer,and I get the impression the mine you mentioned is Hard Rock?I dont beleive your piece was likely "lost",it just was never found, and it brothers and sisters probably led the lucky soul to the hardrock Highgrade
