Recently I got permission to hunt an old home site. The original house was built in the late 1800s and the house was finally torn down in the 1990s. Dean (my hunting buddy) and myself headed out with high expectations knowing that the place had never been hunted so we had silver in our heads as we parked and looked over the house site. Although the house is gone the owners keep the yard mowed. The ground was as dry as a chip since our area of Virginia is in the worst drought that it has seen since 1880. We knew that was going against us but we were still optimistic. After hunting for three hours only a single sliver coin was found! We also found a big handfull of clads and late memorial pennies as well as the stuff in the photo. The mercury dime is a 1945-P but the neat thing is the 69 caliber musket ball. It was down about 5 inches. The other stuff was typical stuff except the round disk (or cap) marked "Red Velvet" and I have no idea what it is.
We are planning on going back after we get some much needed rain. It is hard to believe that the yard turned up a musket ball but almost no old coins.
