Hi new here!

Welcome to Tnet John,
just hang in there, one of the pros will help ya with a detector for ya...

It sounds like you primarily want to go for coins. I'd look on eBay for a used Whites machine.
There is a Coinmaster Classic III ending in hours only up to $50.
The bounty hunter will work, but on a basic level all the way around.

Hi, Johnmed3 and welcome to tnet an awesome place to get info and keep up on all the happenings. Just from what I've read and seen I'd save your money and get the ACE 250 by Garrett. Do some reading around this forum and there are a lot of users that highly recommend it for beginners. I know when I by my wife a unit that will be the unit I'll buy. Check out Kellyco.com at the top of the home page, about 212.00 or so. I had a little experience with a low dollar bountyhunter and it was poor at best. I wish my buddy had waited and got the ACE 250 but now he's stuck with the BH. Good luck and HH

Welcome to Tnet! So glad you joined us and looking forward to seeing more of ya!

Thanks Cynangyl this is a great website/forum! Hope to post some findings pretty soon :icon_sunny: .

Welcome! The rules are quite simple here: Send me 20% of all your finds, and you can continue detecting undisturbed :) If BootyBay, radarWill, fccdFed, cynangyl, or Johnmed3 say their permits cost only 10% of your finds, don't listen to them! Their permits don't come with a universal permit allowing you to detect on private property and sensitive historical sites

I did not read all of the replies so I may repeat some suggestions. You want a light machine. You want a machine that has a decent display giving you not only an indication of what the machine thinks is under the ground but how deep. American detectors will identify American coins with icons and then everything else in the ground will fall between these icons. Coin icons are mostly reliable but will also not be accurate for many reasons. After you become proficient at understanding your, hopefully, simple machine and becoming satisfied with your results you may want to start considering upgrading to another machine that will satisfy you more than the one you learn with. Or, you may not want to bother because the machine you selected to learn with is sufficient and satisfies your needs.

Everybody will push their machine or one THEY wish they had bought. Keep this in mind, a better machine does not always find better coins; you have to be where the coins are to be found and most any modern detector will find coins to approx. 5-6 inches depth. For the deeper objects you do need a deep-seeking machine.
