Ok I am new to all of this as well as my husband and we have two major questions.....

What is the best Metal detector we are looking at buying a Whites DFX E Series but are not sure if it is worth the grand that it costs?

and the second question is are there any laws that prohibit you from detecting around old schools, churches, etc I know that you cant go on private property.....but what are the laws and what about state parks, etc...?THanks

The dfx-e is certainly a good detector, in the hands of an experienced operator. A beginner may be overwhelmed at all the controls and adjustments. If you insist on buying one I would recommend a good used one or perhaps maybe a less expensive entry level unit, the Ace 250 is getting all the raves right now.

As far as laws you will just have to research your area as they vary from state to state or even within states. As a rule, most state parks are off limits or highly restricted...m2cw

you can find info on the old schools churches ect.by checking out your library and looking at old maps.
Most of these are on private property now,so all you can do is find out who owns the property and contact them and ask to hunt.
some people tell me i have the gift of gab, because i have only been turned down 1 or 2 times in the 12 yrs i have been detecting.....
Welcome to the hobby and happy hunting!!!!!

T & C: In my opinion, I suggest you purchase 2 Garrett Ace 250's for $400 & save the rest! That way you each have one! I have one & really enjoy it!

I am a Whites DFX user and I agree with this post. Buy the "Lexus with every power option" once you learn how to drive! The DFX is a great machine, but buying a detector for each of you is a smart choice in my book! 2 people with detectors will find more stuff then just one. ;D

Hereabouts state parks limit MD to beaches, county parks limit it to Labor Day to Memorial Day ("off season"), town parks are the most agreeable and usually allow MD if you present yourself politely (ahead of time and without the detector in hand) at the town office or maintenance shed. I frequent state game lands/multi-use lands and have never been questioned there. Lots of abandoned farms, foundations and cellar holes in those areas. Town offices & county parks are in the phone book under "Local Government". Some require you to register at some office (not necessarily at the park) before detecting.

Historical sites, war memorials (including the grounds around them) and federally goverened sites are pretty much off limits.

Well, that question always opens up a bag of worms. It really depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. Relic hunting ? Get a beep/dig machine (nautilus, tejon, vaquero, cibola, fisher 1270). Visual ID machines won't be able to tell what something is deep, they start to lose reliabilty the deeper a target is. Coins/jewelry? You want an ID machine to help in all that pulltab trash and a small coil. Beach ? You need a machine that will work well in salt soaked sand. No machine is the best at everything. You really have to figure out what you want to do the most and go from there.

If you are thinking about two detectors....why not take a look at the whites M6????? I use a DFX believe me comparing the ace to the DFX is only done by those who have never had a dfx! I heard the ace is a fine entry level detector and beyond so that might be the right choice for you not sure... If you want options, have patience and like to play around with your settings>>>>DFX (its loaded). The m6 gets rave reviews for coin shooting. I would be careful with my choice if you do choose the ace and decide to move upward, I am sure the ace would be worth keeping as an extra detector also or would reasonably hold its retail value for selling again. Good luck!

For each of use, I'd choose the XLT. It has good ID and is really user friendly. It's turn on and go too.

I started years back with a $200 White's Coinmaster..it paid for yourself 3X over. Then I bought a White's Prizm last September..it's already about half paid for with clad in only 6 months time, and I've found hundreds of other things with it including 7 rings.

If your just starting out, get one that is easy to use and won't break your wallet..you'll have more fun than you will imagine, and after you become really good at detecting you could upgrade.

Good luck and happy hunting!
