Weigh it is the best option. 3.1 Grams or so is copper. 2.7 or so is zinc. Of course you have to use a scale accurate to a tenth of a gram.
 

Bounce it off of a hard surface and listen. If it rings it's copper. If it clunks it's a zincoln.
 

just save all cents 1981 and older so you know they are copper 100% of the time.

Actually its usually 3.11g for copper, 2.50g on zinc. I find about 75% of 1982s are copper. A $10 gram/grains scale at Harbor Freight can easily tell the difference.
 

I have an old balance scale... Put a new penny on one side & see which is heavier. Piece of cake!
