I don't guess the state news has picked up on this yet. For years they've had that S on Tenderfoot Mountain in Salida. Last night somebody went up and changed it to a dollar sign. They left a note that said "In a time of ever increasing price gouging, greed, and wealth, we've corrected the S to better reflect what Salida has become. Behold. Money Mountain. Dedicated to those of us struggling to make a living in this overpriced town." Believe me, I know where they're coming from.

What is the letter S made of? I’m curious how you would go about making that? Wood and paint? White crushed rock? It looks huge.🤔🤔

Well it's been up since 1926 and is 80ft. long by 50ft. wide. Schools students came up with the idea. Originally it was a wooden frame filled with white washed rocks. After a few years they re-did it in cement. You can see a few hillside markers like this around various Colorado towns.

Things have sure changed in the upper Arkansas valley since I lived up there. Back then the economy was based on all us miners. These days it's all become a playground for the rich. About all I could offer to the perpetrator of that statement is either find a way to make more money or just move on to a place that's not run by a load of wealthy folks, because it's never going back to the time anyone could make a decent living up there.
