Westwego is on the west bank across the river from N.O.
It's next to Marrero - industrial river towns in Jefferson Parish.
Even though it's known as the west bank, it's physically south of N.O.
If you head upstream a few miles, you'll eventually realize you're on the west side of the river.

The way my grandfather put it, it got its name from a coin flip --- as in which direction do we go from here? "West we go."

Don't know if it's true, but it was interesting. My home town is "the place" (La Place), LA.

No one is quite sure how the town got its name, though Westwego was the location from which the railroad was compensated by the State to build a railroad to the west. Folklore holds that as travelers departed the station they heard rail workers yell "west we go" thus the name Westwego.
