A town called "West We Go"?

That is unusual...
;)

Westwego is on the west bank across the river from N.O.
It's next to Marrero - industrial river towns in Jefferson Parish.
Even though it's known as the west bank, it's physically south of N.O.
If you head upstream a few miles, you'll eventually realize you're on the west side of the river.

Carman-

Everyone wants to be just like LJ!

The way my grandfather put it, it got its name from a coin flip --- as in which direction do we go from here? "West we go."

Don't know if it's true, but it was interesting. My home town is "the place" (La Place), LA.

No one is quite sure how the town got its name, though Westwego was the location from which the railroad was compensated by the State to build a railroad to the west. Folklore holds that as travelers departed the station they heard rail workers yell "west we go" thus the name Westwego.

The above is a quote from an article I read.

I see. I wondered if it was just a one word name. Now I know.
I have only been in that area once...played a couple of gigs at Houma and some other small town in that region when I was in a rock band.
