Can you tell me if you think this could possibly be from a CS Brooke shell? A friend found it recently where The Battle of Nashville was fought. Thanks in advance.

It is definitely a Brooke Ratchet-Plate sabot, strictly Confederate-made... and an extremely rare find.

You can view examples of various calibers of Brooke Ratchet-Plate sabot shells here:
Ridgeway Civil War collection Artillery shells, Brooke (Confederate)

It appears to be either a 2.9" or 3"-caliber sabot. Please put a digital caliper across its top (the side with the ratchet-planes), and tell us the measurement. I'm asking for the top's edge to be measured because firing expanded the bottom edge outward into the cannon's rifling. The measurement is important because the 3"-caliber Brooke shell is much rarer than the 2.9"-caliber.

Thank you so much for your reply and I will ask my friend to bring it to the next Middle Tennessee Metal Detecting Club meeting in July to measure it or possibly she knows someone with calipers.
