Could someone give me some info on Herkimer Diamonds? I will post a picture as soon as my 17 yr old daughter gets home tonite. I am a technical retard. Anyways, I found a quartz crystal on a mountain pass in NV. The surrounding rocks were a granite type with quartz and mica. Not a black rock like I sawy Herkimers in on EBAY. Is it only a Herkimer if found in NY? It is really convoluted and is really heavy for its size. Seems to have skeletal marks maybe? and allot of rainbow colors in it?
I realize they aren't worth much, but I haven't seen any quartz in NV quite like it.

Yes Herkimer diamonds are only found in Herkimer County NY. As you know they are not diamonds but doubly terminated clear quartz crystals which resemble diamonds in appearance. Most quartz you find is not doubly terminated(crystal faces on both ends). However, Herkimer diamonds are pretty common as they are after all just quartz. I believe there is a fee location one can collect these quartz crystals.in NY.

Enjoy your quartz. Put it on your mantel and show it to your friends .Beautiful found minerals are always more special to me.

thanks George,
I appreciate the info...I'll post the pix tommorrow if you find the time to look and tell me if it has some of the same characteristics I'd be obliged. I love rocks but have no formal education. If your ever interested in any local info from here I'd be happy to return the favor.

Herkimer Diamonds form in vugs (hollow spots) within solid limestone; we found some in 'dry' holes, most were packed in mud/silt.
