Here's an interesting button....what is it?

Found this today at an old sight, anyone have any info. The back says Waterbury Button Co. and the front says USMSS on the top and CHM and Co. Any date and meaning to it? Or is it a modern one.... Thanks and HH.... M

I think late 1800's from the back mark. Cant find anything on the front.
