Here's a real mindbender...

I was going through my collection of oddball objects I've collected over the years and came upon this little beauty. If anyone wants to take a shot at this, please, be my guest! It's just shy of 2 1/2 inches long and 1 1/4 inches at it's widest point. This was found on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the water (only about 10 yards or so from the beach). It is non-metallic but not wood either. Too heavy to be wood ( I'd say approx.2oz.). It looks like it should "flake" but it's layers are quite sound. The "point" is actually pretty sharp as is the "fanned-out" section. I don't believe it is Native American but can't think of anything else. Any input is well appreciated...

could be a very old Sharks tooth?

That would be pretty cool if it was, but how would it deteriorate the way that it has (if it is a tooth)? If so, it must have been pretty darn big! Maybe one of the "shark pit boys" could jump in on this one...

Some woods are very heavy, such as Ironwood, and will sink. It looks like burnt wood....maybe petrified?

That's what I thought BigCy, especially after your post about that chunk you found. While it does sink and it does resemble burnt wood - it will not flake or scratch. It has a "cool" feel to it when you hold it in your hands (temp wise). I have seen coal before in many different forms - it ain't coal. The "layers" you can see in the second pic - have an almost "mica-like" look to them. I'm sure if I used a knife I can get some to break off but I do not want to damage it. Someone suggested to me a few years back that it might be some type of fossilized mussel. I'm not sure if that's too ridiculous or not...

That might just be it. Didn't really think about that possibility.

I never thought that. Where I found it had a huge Native American presence there.

Sounds silly, but can you write with it? Will it leave any marks on paper? Asking if it might be coal based. Does look petrified. Nice.

Just tried to "write" with it - no dice. Still don't think it's wood. Thought about coal but it seams too heavy.

To me it looks like a volcanic ash. If so it would be almost as hard as diamond. perhaps a 9. I would have a good geologist check it out. My next guess would be iron wood which were on some old ships.

Based on the shape, and the view from the top that seems to reveal a few hollow tubes, I would say it is some form of fossilized coral. It appears to be partially converted to quartz, I can see it betweeen the layers on some of the pics.

My son found a petrified sloth claw once. This one is one I found on the net.
