Ok Maybe someone has done this and would be willing to share the math a little.

How much 14k gold would it take to make 10 Ounces of 24k gold? after being refined that is. and just for fun. lets figure up 10 and 18k or mix and match too! 8)

I came up with this and wanted to see how close i am.

So if 14k gold is around 583.5 parts of gold to 1

and 1 troy ounce of 24k gold is 31.1 grams.

So in theory and doing some rounding up. it would take right at or over 600 grams of 14k to make a 10 ounce bar of solid gold after bring refined?

Although i don't know how much, if any, gold is lost during the refining process but very curious to find out.

I have a scrap gold and silver buying business and i am doing this to see how much of my 14k gold i need to set back before i sell to reach enough to acutally have a 10 oz bar made..

So if anyone has some better math. Which i am sure someone does. Please share. I am very curious to see how much it would take.

This is the 1st time i have even wondered about this. but i keep selling my 10 and 14k gold every month although i keep the 18k gold and .925 stuff so i figured why not set some back to acutally have some real gold made up.. ?

Thanks

Times the troy oz. amount by 31.1 to get grams. For 10 oz. u get 311 gms.
Times this by the ratio Kt. In this case 24/14.
This gives 533 gms .

This is in theory as the stamped Kt. value can be out by up to 10 % due to human error but mainly crookedness by the jeweller / maker.

Also the melt loss of 1-5 % is present. The amount of pure gold is unchanged but impurities are burnt off.
So after melting 533 grams u could end up with about 500 gms of scrap gold with the real pure gold still present and relatively unchanged ( only determined after assaying ).

In summary u simply have to trust the refiner . For a 10 troy oz. bar send in 750gm of your junk to be on safe side and any left over put aside ( as credit ) for next ingot or sent back to you.

Thanks CyberDan. Now that is a GREAT chart.. I saved it!!

Awesome..
