That's really not much as that could be a single gold coin depending on weight, year, and type of coin. Still in this day and age people rob and kill for far less.

8 $50.00 Gold Pieces.

20 Double Eagles.

40 $10.00 Pieces

80 $5.00 pieces



160 $2.50 's

or 400 $1.00 pieces.

Most likely was a Mixture in a Jar or Tin Box.

Did she Miss some by thinking she got it all ?

You do realize that that is $400 worth of gold at the time it was discovered and so not the actual face value that may have been on a gold coin.

maybe. maybe not.

if you are correct... since the average price of gold in 1894 was $20.67 an oz.
Gold prices for 200 years

that would mean she found approximately 19.35 ounces of gold.

again I don't know how many coins and of what denomination
added up to 19.35 Pounds. So I don't know if it could have been a Mason jar or Tin box full

right now gold is $1274.50an ounce
that today, would be a find of over $24,000.00 dollars worth of gold.



and I doubt they were talking the price a a coin dealer would mark each coin up due to date etc.

they didn't say ancient or foreign gold so I'm taking for granted they were sill recent spendable gold , and they counted it dollar for dollar
