It was a heart shaped sea urchin belonging to the Echinodermata Phylum . Found from the upper Cretaceous through the Pliocene in North America. Similiar to modern day starfish. They lived on the ocean floor.
 

Hey irbad,

Did you have to dig the hemiasters out of a matrix, or were they already free?

You can scrape a very tiny piece off the amber colored one, stick it to a pin, and put a lighter to it. If it smells like burning wood (esp. pine) it is amber.
