It looks like half of a rivet, like those used to piece together leather (like a cartridge box). But I've never seen one with a star before . . .

Thanks for your clarification parsonwalker :occasion14: , but does anyone have anything more specific about the star rivet?

I have in my notes that those rivets were harness makers rivets which came in both brass and copper, dating from the mid-late 1800's and were sold as "Star Brand Rivvets" ... They were manufactured by U.T. Hungerford Brass and Copper Company of New York. Here is a clip out of a 1910 harness publication:

creskol, I have found those before but was never comfortable with what I was told they were. Now I know. Nice detective work.
