A friend of mine busted his boat prop, and needed one that I had. He traded me this Celt for it. He said his grandfather found it working on railroad tracks. Does this look reasonable or fake?

I love barters! I agree, if it's real, it's amazing, but I am ignorant as to real or not real. hope someone here can tell you what it is.

I'm with you bro. Im pretty sure the Celt is real. The carving? Some one could have had That done. Old people, such as my grand dad did not see any monetary value to artifacts. If they could alter it to make it look cooler, they didn't think twice. I don't know?

That is really cool, if it's real. Nice points in the background, too! :occasion14:

Thanks man. The points in the back are finds of my father and I. By the way, what does occasion 14 mean?

It is the code for an emoticon. If you are using your computer it unusually shows up as two smiley faces toasting a drink. When you are writing a post, there is a little icon with a smiley face that lets you add different emoticons to your post. That stuff does not usually work though if you are using an iPad or phone.

Ok! Cheers! I'm on iPhone. It flashed to two smileys with a beer and then back to occasion 14. I jail broke my phone so it is different than most iPhones.

The celt looks right,,, but a thunderbird is usually bad news. Still cool that you got it from your Grand Dad.

No. I got it from a friend. His granddad found it. I traded him a boat prop for it

the patina or lack there of is wrong for it to have been done when the piece was made. it would most likely be darker than the rest of the piece.

I was wandering about that. Do you think it is an authentic Celt that has been defaced, or is it possible to determine with the naked eye? This is the only piece I have that my dad or I didn't find. I like it but don't want it mixed in with my stuff!

I can't tell with a photo. Take a magnifieing glass and look at the bit or anywhere else you can find good grind marks. Look for the patina to be consistant.

10-4 thanks for the advice. I'll do first thing in the morning. I left it at work.

Looks almost more like a Pestle from the photo. The outline of the bird looks newer than the item by the patina of the stone. In other words the outline is lighter in color. As GB has pointed out already.

I would be very concerned by that carving in the side. I agree that it may be something that was added to an otherwise authentic piece. Good luck!!
