Hello and nice to meet you.

A little more info would help folks give you some advice. Such as,

where ya'll live
What kind of metal detecting he may be interested (coins, gold, relics--- Or maybe all of it) in.
Any metal detecting experience
Approximate budget range.

I'm sure that with the above info, you'll get some good answers.

My husband has been talking about getting a metal detector for quite awhile now. My in-laws have agreed to help me buy on for him as an early birthday present to take to the beach at the end of July. What is a decent brand of metal detector (preferably cheap!) that he could use at the beach and back home? Any replies are greatly appreciated :)

It all depends on your budget, as you definitely get what you pay for. If $600 is reasonable, you can't go wrong with a Garrett AT Pro. It gives great performance, and is also waterproof up to 10 feet, which makes it very versatile, especially if it will be used near bodies of water. I own one and absolutely love it, as it was my first, and was very easy to learn. If that's the route you go, I recommend bigboyshobbies.net. Free FAST shipping, and excellent service.

It should be noted that salt water metal detectors are special detectors and usually cost more. Many detectors will work fine in the dry sand away from the water, but, if you want to get near the water's edge, you'll need a detector that is built for salt water beaches. It's a dynamic mineralisation issue.

We live in PA, and I think he just wants it for general use so he has something to do when we go to the beach....he hates the beach!! He has no experience with metal detectors and I'm looking at around $400 to spend if I can get away with it. He has mentioned Minelab detectors, but I looked them up and they are like $1500!! Way too much money for us! Are used detectors worth it, or are they too much of a risk?

Minelab makes a range of detectors so not all are in the 1500$ range. If a detector is still under warranty- minelab will permit the warranty to be transferred. If there is a local dealer in your area, he can demo the machines so that you can find what most closely meets your needs.

Tesoros are given a lifetime warranty. It's not transferable, but the build lasts for a lifetime (i.e. the quality is so high that you shouldn't ever need the warranty). If I were you, I would try to bump up the price slightly to $450 and get a new Tesoro Vacquero. For the price, it's hard to beat. It has a little bit of a learning curve, but it's well worth it. The $450 price tag will get the warranty with it, but you could get an used one cheaper without a warranty.

The AT Pro is great, it can be used about anywhere. No need to worry about rain or spray from water, can go underwater to 10'. It can ground balance to wet salt sand or seawater. With the sensitivity turned down a bit on salt, it may still detect coins to 8". The $595 price is the lowest they can list online, but a dealer may quote a lower price on the phone or in e-mail.

If you can't go to $500 or so, there is a new model by Teknetics called the Eurotek Pro. It comes with a 8" concentric coil for $219, or with an 11" double D coil for $299 (the DD better in most areas). The online manual says new proprietary circuit allows it to be used in iron ground without needing a ground balance control, & that it may get accuare IDs to 8" & reads depth to 9" in non-motion pinpoint. Has a large numeric ID # indicating conductivity, so one can have a pretty good idea if it's a coin. Gets coins close to trash, & iron response can be adjusted for volume relative to coins, or off where it just flashes on iron.

Manual on website tekneticst2.com/ IIRC. You may need to contact the mfr to ask if it works on a saltwater beach. If not, you'd probably need to get a more expensive mode. It isn't waterproof & saltwater getting in a land detector would be a disaster, so it would at least need a cover for the control box. Might be a few videos of this on You Tube.

The AT Pro is a use anywhere detector, except not in water over 10 feet deep. Lots of gold jewelry has been found in shallow water, but often gets found quickly by one detectorist or another. Best wishes, George (MN)

I have bought used detectors with no problems at all do ur research it'll be a lot easier for someone to help u on picking out the right detector for u if mayb u have a brand in mind also u can get those $1500 detectors with all the bells & whistles for a third off line eBay mayb or other sights but either way whichever detector ull get they are all a little useless without practice its easy for an experienced person with a $400 detector who knows it to out hunt a non experienced person with a $1500 detector good luck & I hope u get the right one for all ur needs
