Has anyone ever seen anything like this thing in the middle? Found close to what is believed to be a Civil War campsite. unknown metal.jpg

Looks like a fry pan or griddle handle to me.

Could be part of a gun tool. If you notice the photo below there are two possible gun tool artifacts this could represent.. The first one being on the bottom of the page in the 2nd row right above the T shape gun-tool part then the second one it also looks like is the end of the piece in the middle of the page. Maybe a picture of the back may help a little more in determining this. Hope you had a good time out today!

I've looked this piece over real good and it doesn't appear to be broken or part of a larger piece.

Ok that is good info i couldn't really tell if it was off a broken piece or not. This could still have been used for a gun tool though even with it's small size if you notice in the photo there are some tools that are about close to this size, there were literally 100s if not 1000 different gun tools the soldiers used and sometimes if a piece they lost or broke and they didnt have an extra one they would have to make a homemade kinda tool that would work.. The hole on your artifact looks very similar to the end piece on some gun tools that being said it could be a camp or wagon related artifact also. Good luck in the ID! :occasion14:

Good stuff! Thanks for the info. Probably going to hit it hard again tomorrow. Buddy found a pick axe head 20 inches down!

That is good information, I too thought it was a piece of something. Just a suggestion on taking photos, and that is to take the photo on any color than white. I always thought white would be the best, but Bigcypresshunter, told me in my early forum days it was the worst. I didn't believe him, but I tried Green and blue and it did make a big difference. Good Luck! Cindy

Absolutely true! White is a terrible background, especially for rusted items. I use a dark royal blue. :) Breezie
