I am new to this site as well as a few others that I have registered with and the only reason I have began to study coins and there values is because my dad has had me look on the net lately for prices on some of the coins that he has recently got. I really am mad at myself because about a year ago we moved in a house and I found about 50 plus mercury dimes and I needed some money real bad and fast and took them to a silver and gold place and sold them. I am mad now that I have been studying for my dad at the money I just let someone have and as bad as I needed the money and told the man why I was selling them he never once mentioned that I was setting on a gold mind compared to what he gave for them. Anyway my dad just recently paid $4.00 for a mercury dime and when I researched it the dime is very much so wanted by many. It is a 1916 d minted mercury dime and it is in pretty good condition, I think. Anyway he is wanting to sale it and I dont know what sites on the net are good sites to deal with and I dont know what to look for when it comes to finding someone in the area that I live in. Can anyone please tell me anything at all? I am growing very interested in learning some more about coins.:laughing7:

I am no expert but from what i have learned on this coin is there is just as many conterfits as well as real deal, best thing you can do to get a real primium for your coin is get it slabbed

I have suggested that to him however he said that if he sends it it get graded it may not make it back to him ect. although I have a little more faith in people and search for the best rated ect. However he is old school and not very trusting of the way certain things work sometimes. But this coin has been used and has wear on it from being passed around. I have not done any study on fake coins or anything but I really dont think it is fake. Maybe that is the next little thing to read on... do you by chance know what having it graded and stuff cost? It may be that I can find someone in the area that I personally can take it to and have that done. He has so much that he really should consider having them all done. Thats for his own good I do know that. I am gonna try and upload a image of this dime for anyone that is intersted in commenting on it and hopefully helping me with this. that would be a perfect example of a dime you should send in for confirmation and grading.

photos can only tell you so much & to be honest, considering the wear on the coin
& the sharpness of the Mint Mark, I say fake. but.... as I said photos can be deceiving. & I'm no expert.
send it in. if real it will be worth it.

like maybe $1000.00 + Worth it

thanks jeff of pa you are so right about pictures be deceiving sometimes. Here is another one of the back of the coin with the lighting different on the coin. I took several pics of the back of the coin and posted the one picture that looked like the mint mark was noticeable I guess would be the best way to explain it, I thought that it would get in return more people to also look at it, however it is not easy to see, you can tell that there is or was some kind of mark in the area that the d would be. I am gonna do my best to talk him into getting this coin looked at and graded or what ever...it is however this one coin that has got me into learning and exploring the world of coins and for the last hour and half or so have been reading all the post on the coin roll hunting and I am so ready to go buy a few rolls of what ever I can get and see if it is as fun as it seems to sound. Anyway this is a awsome site to pick up some knowledge on something I personally dont know anything about. IMAG0271.jpg

If ur gonna research more on this dime study the mint mark make sure the d matchs the d mint mark of a real 1916 d..i can be wrong but if i remember correctly the d on a 1916 should match the d of a 1915 i can tell you study the sharpness at the top of the d........to answer u question on how much will it cost i recently checked with my lcd he told me it usually runs around $30 to grade..the only way a real collector will even consider buying ur coin "if real" is if u u grade it..hope this info will help u get started good luck with ur coin "keep me posted"

I think this dime was made the same year the Barber dimes stopped, i saw a Barber with the same date. I dont think you have a counterfeit, check the reeded edge for over lapped part where it doesnt look right. No matter what I agree with the above posts, get it slabbed. The coin is worth way more than the 30 it costs to grade it. I also never encountered a fake that was heavily circulated.

I wasnt able to see the pics posted for some odd reson but if the coin is worn but the mint mark is crisp chances could be someone with artistic skill added a d to a 1916 plain...i know im in the market to buy a 1916 d for my merc collection but will never buy unless its graded and im a newbie with lil experience.......from what i learned research and knowing ur coins is 50% of ur investment...

the first pic it appeard to stand out like a sore thumb in the middle of heavy wear.
But apparently just the pic as his second one looks normal

thanks you guys....I am gonna have this dime graded if he will let me take it from the house and have it done. I am gonna stress that this only makes his coin worth the money he is needing so badly. I will keep you guys all posted on the progress.

Love the coin- I think it's 100% Real, looks like all the merc's I've found in circulation, just a little bit more valuable ;)
Best of luck to you and your dad, and this site is real good for honest information fast.
Good luck
Wicka
